Enamul Ali

Software engineer at Capgemini, in Manchester.

Software is a solution to a problem. Each part of it should be able to say which problem it solves. Anything on the screen that doesn’t need to be there, shouldn’t.

  5. Writing code, throughout

I work on cloud platforms for government-scale systems, the kind where somebody gets a phone call at four in the morning when something breaks.

I started in full-stack work and then moved into infrastructure, so I have seen most of the lifecycle from both ends. Recently I’ve been looking at design and its intersection with software.

So I rebuilt this site

I have started to learn more about how interfaces are put together, and put some of it to use. Everything on a screen has to earn its place. Something that plays on every load has to be worth seeing every time. Restraint is harder than decoration, because nobody can see the thing you did not do.

Speed is part of the design. A page that arrives quickly is a better experience than a beautiful one that keeps you waiting. This one is plain HTML, built ahead of time and served from Cloudflare. The only JavaScript it ships is about 1 KB, for the slider below.

Career

Jun 2023 – Present

Building things in the cloud @ Capgemini

Infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines and the automation around them. Most of the job is turning something manual into something nobody has to do again. Cut $3,660 a year from the AWS bill by migrating to serverless, and helped roll out the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation.

Oct 2022

Legacy systems and data migration @ HMRC

Contributed to the Making Tax Digital programme, streamlining data migration on legacy SAP systems.

Aug 2022

Junior Software Developer @ Code and Create

My first job in software engineering. I worked across the stack, building features and supporting cloud-hosted applications.

Apr 2022

Software apprentice (a.k.a. bootcamp survivor) @ Northcoders

Completed an intensive software engineering bootcamp, covering full-stack development, databases and DevOps fundamentals.

Sep 2020

Supervisor of Things & People @ Department of Health and Social Care

Managed people, logistics and process improvements for the Manchester COVID-19 testing programme.

Jul 2019

Graduated (BSc) @ University of Salford

A degree in Psychology, after four years of essays and research. Mostly about why people do what they do.

Projects

  • A local charity’s software

Helping a UK registered charity with its IT estate since 2024. A donation platform that has raised over £50,000, native apps on iOS and Android, and internal staff apps to boost productivity.

  • Sawt

Take the music out. Runs on Demucs and Modal.

  • Hijri Date

Shows the current Islamic date in the macOS menu bar. Built with Swift and SwiftUI.

  • RTL Text Fixer

Fixes right-to-left text that software like Affinity Publisher renders backwards.

  • Audio Transcriber

Transcribes English and Arabic audio into structured JSON.

  • Our House

A mobile app for delegating and tracking household chores, built with React Native and Firebase.

  • Quick Notes

A note-taking web app built with React, Node.js and PostgreSQL.
